Cultural League of German Jews (Kulturbund) An umbrella organisation for Jewish artists and performers in Germany The Kulturbund was established in June 1933 in Berlin, by the initiative of Kurt Singer, and centres were later established in other cities. The goal of the Kulturbund was to steer Jewish artists whom the Nazis had barred from German toward Jewish audiences, thereby enriching Jewish public life and providing creative artists with jobs. A national alliance of cultural associations was established in April 1935; its membership climbed to nearly 90,000 by the end of that year. The Kulturbund remained active even after most German Jewish organisations were dissolved in early 1939 and did not merge into the Reichsvereinigung until September 1941.
